Babies born as result of a repeat teenpregnancy are even more likely to be born premature—early and at alow birth weight.

Declining teen pregnancy rates are thought to be attributed tomore effective birth control practice, newer methods of birthcontrol (e.g., long-acting, reversible contraception), anddecreased sexual activity among teens.

In the United States, the annual cost of teen pregnancies fromlost tax revenues, public assistance, child health care, fostercare and involvement with the criminal justice system is estimatedto be about $7 billion.
