A helium ion with a single ele
A helium ion with a single electron (denoted He+) isin an excited state with radius the same as that of the groundstate of hydrogen.
(a) What is n for the He1+ ion?(b) How much energy in eV is needed to ionize the ion from thisexcited state?eV
Answer:
a)radius of the ground state of hydrogen = 0.53 A0 ;where 1 A0 = 10^-10 m
therefore, 0.53*10^-10 = (0.53*10^-10)*(Z2/n2)
or, n = 2
thus, the n value = 2 for He+ ion
b) ionization energy = 13.6(Z2/n2) eV =13.6 eV
