1. Conservation of Momentum Principle – In your ownwords, explain the conservation of momentum, and the condition ofits application.
2. In your understanding, what real world applications couldbenefit from the study of momentum and impulse?
Answer:
1.
Momentum is conserved for any interaction between two objectsoccurring in an isolated system. This conservation of momentum canbe observed by a total system momentum analysis or by a momentumchange analysis.
The system must be isolated or any kind of external force shouldnot be acting on the system, this is the main condition formomentum to be conserved.
If we were to consider the above system and taking intoconsidertion that system is isolated. So there would be a transferof momentum , since there no exernal source so the and hence noenergy is being given or getting out of the system so the sum ofmomentum before and after would be equal.
If we were to think other way , that momentum is not conservedand the sytem is isolated then this means energy is either createdin the system or destroyed in the system which then violates theenergy conservation law.
2.
One of the applications of conservation of momentum is thelaunching of rockets. The rocket fuel burns are pushed the exhaustgases downwards, and due to this, the rocket gets pushedupwards.
Motorboats also work on the same principle, it pushes the waterbackwards and gets pushed forwards in reaction to conservemomentum.
A system of gun and a bullet. Before firing the gun, both thegun and the bullet are at rest, so the total momentum of the systemis zero. As the gun is fired, bullet shoots out of the gun andacquires momentum. To conserve the momentum of the system, the gunrecoils.
